# Perplexity SEO for B2B: Get Cited on Business Questions > Perplexity SEO is the work of becoming one of the sources Perplexity quotes. Its search engine filters out stale pages, ranks short passages rather than whole pages and favours authoritative domains. To get cited on business questions, let PerplexityBot in, write self-contained dated passages, and earn mentions in forums, on LinkedIn and on the pages it already reads. You ask a question, it searches the web, and it writes an answer with numbered citations next to the claims. Its help center says it gathers information ["from authoritative sources like articles, websites, and journals"](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work) and that each answer links to the original sources. Perplexity SEO is the work of becoming one of those sources, and of being described correctly when you are. For B2B companies, Perplexity matters for two reasons. The first is its format. An answer with sources you can check suits the way buyers research, and its Deep Research mode ["performs dozens of searches, reads hundreds of sources"](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/introducing-perplexity-deep-research) to write a report, which is close to what a buyer does when building a vendor shortlist. The second is the workplace version. Perplexity says [more than 50,000 organizations use Perplexity Enterprise](https://www.perplexity.ai/enterprise), which answers from a company's own files and tools alongside the web. As with [Gemini and Copilot at work](/blog/gemini-copilot-visibility/), your public pages compete with whatever already sits in the buyer's drive. It isn't only a B2B channel. Consumers use Perplexity to compare products, and it now sells through shopping cards and checkout, which we cover in [Perplexity shopping and the Merchant Program](/blog/perplexity-shopping-merchant-program/). This guide is about the other half, the questions where Perplexity cites a source rather than a product card. Business questions are the main example, and the same mechanics apply to a consumer brand answering "is this worth it" questions. ## How Perplexity picks and orders its sources Perplexity hasn't published a ranking formula. It has published something more useful. In September 2025, its research team wrote a detailed post on [the search infrastructure behind its answer engine](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/architecting-and-evaluating-an-ai-first-search-api), released alongside its Search API, which uses the same index. Most Perplexity SEO advice skips it. The table below follows it stage by stage. | Stage | What Perplexity says it does | What it means for your page | |---|---|---| | Index | Tracks "over 200 billion unique URLs" and uses machine learning to decide which pages to index or refresh | A page PerplexityBot can't reach, or never revisits, can't be quoted | | Hot storage | Keeps some documents ready to serve, "prioritizing documents from authoritative domains" and undercovered topics | Authority still counts, and so does covering a topic nobody else covers well | | Prefilter | Removes "clearly non-responsive or stale content" from the candidates | Undated or outdated pages can drop out before ranking starts | | Early ranking | "Lexical and embedding-based scorers optimized for speed" | Use the words buyers use, and answer the meaning behind them | | Final ranking | "More powerful cross-encoder reranker models" sculpt the final set | The best direct answer to the exact question wins the last cut | | Passages | Splits documents "into self-contained spans, each of which can be individually retrieved and ranked" | A single section can be cited even if the rest of the page isn't | Two points stand out. First, Perplexity scores passages, not just pages. Its Search API announcement says documents are divided into ["fine-grained units"](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/introducing-the-perplexity-search-api) that are individually scored against the query. A long guide with one excellent paragraph can be cited for that paragraph. A page where every answer depends on the paragraph before it gives the reranker nothing clean to lift. Second, freshness is built into the pipeline. The same announcement calls information staleness ["one of the biggest failure modes for AI agents"](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/introducing-the-perplexity-search-api) and says the system handles tens of thousands of index updates every second. A pricing page that still shows last year's plans is a page the engine has reasons to avoid. The order of the numbered citations follows from this pipeline. Perplexity doesn't document how it numbers sources in an answer, so treat any claim about "position one in Perplexity" with care. What it does document is that the final set is chosen by rerankers judging how well each passage answers the question. ![Diagram of Perplexity's source pipeline from a 200 billion URL index through hot storage, a stale content filter, fast lexical and embedding ranking, cross-encoder reranking and passage scoring to the numbered citations in an answer](/blog/perplexity-seo-b2b/diagram-1.svg) *Perplexity's own description of how a page becomes a citation. The filter for stale content comes before any ranking.* ## Perplexity citations: which sites it quotes Perplexity's pipeline tells you how it ranks. Citation studies tell you what wins. Two are large enough to be useful, and both are published by the companies that ran them. **Across all topics, forums and video lead.** Ahrefs tracks the domains Perplexity cites across [more than 3.1 million US queries on every topic](https://ahrefs.com/blog/most-cited-domains-perplexity/). In its September 2026 update, the most cited domain is a discussion forum with 21.6% of citations among the top 50 sources, followed by YouTube at 20.8% and Wikipedia at 6.3%. Ahrefs calls the forum's share "the most concentrated top source of any assistant" it looked at. LinkedIn sits at 24th, with 0.9%. **On business questions, LinkedIn climbs.** That all-topics list is dominated by consumer questions about health, shopping and travel. Semrush's 13-week study of 230,000 prompts found that [Perplexity's top sources were a discussion forum, LinkedIn, NIH, Microsoft and Google](https://www.semrush.com/blog/most-cited-domains-ai/), and that they stayed relatively stable while ChatGPT's shifted. A separate Semrush study of 325,000 prompts across 12 industry categories found that [Perplexity cites LinkedIn in 5.3% of responses](https://www.semrush.com/blog/linkedin-ai-visibility-study/), and that 59% of those citations point to Company Pages, where ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode mostly cite individual members. So the headline numbers don't transfer straight to B2B. A buyer asking Perplexity which compliance platform suits a mid-size bank should expect a different mix from the all-topics list, with more room for vendor documentation, practitioner discussions in forums and company pages on LinkedIn. Check your own questions before assuming. That's why the steps below spread effort across your site, online communities and LinkedIn rather than chasing one domain. ![Diagram mapping three kinds of business questions to the source Perplexity tends to quote for each: named comparisons and facts to your own site, first-person experience questions to forum threads, and questions about who a company is to LinkedIn company pages and listings](/blog/perplexity-seo-b2b/diagram-2.svg) *Each kind of buyer question has a home. Put your answer where Perplexity looks for that kind.* ## How to rank in Perplexity Perplexity doesn't rank you in a list, so "how to rank in Perplexity" really means how to become one of the few passages its rerankers keep, and how to be described the way you'd describe yourself. The six steps below follow the pipeline, from access to measurement. They apply to B2B and B2C brands alike. ## Step 1: Let PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User reach your pages Perplexity's [crawler documentation](https://docs.perplexity.ai/guides/bots) lists two agents, and they behave differently. - **PerplexityBot** is designed "to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity." It isn't used to train foundation models. Perplexity recommends allowing it in robots.txt and allowing its published IP ranges. Its research team says PerplexityBot "complies with explicit limits set forth in robots.txt files." - **Perplexity-User** fetches a page when a user's question needs it. Because a person triggered the visit, Perplexity says it "generally ignores robots.txt rules." So robots.txt decides whether you're in Perplexity's index. It doesn't decide whether Perplexity can ever open your page. If you block PerplexityBot, you've taken yourself out of the index its answers come from. If you meant to block training, PerplexityBot was never the bot doing it. At Earleads, crawler access is the first thing checked in every audit, because if AI systems can't read a site, nothing else measured about it is worth much. The worst case we've worked on wasn't a robots.txt rule at all. A site theme rendered every word through JavaScript, so AI crawlers saw code instead of text, and its gated whitepapers were invisible too. Server-side rendering and explicitly allowing the AI search bots fixed it. Four traps come up again and again. - **CDN settings nobody decided.** Cloudflare's July 2025 change means [every new domain is asked at sign-up whether to allow AI crawlers](https://www.cloudflare.com/press-releases/2025/cloudflare-just-changed-how-ai-crawlers-scrape-the-internet-at-large/). A rushed click during setup can decide your Perplexity visibility long after anyone remembers making it. - **Training rules that catch search bots.** A blanket block on "AI bots" written to stop model training often catches the search crawlers as well. - **Plugins that block every AI bot** regardless of what your robots.txt says. - **Testing from a laptop.** Changing your browser's user agent proves little, because firewalls check the real IP. Perplexity publishes its IP ranges for [PerplexityBot](https://www.perplexity.com/perplexitybot.json) and [Perplexity-User](https://www.perplexity.com/perplexity-user.json) so you can verify both. Check your server logs for each one instead. Our full checklist is in [blocking AI crawlers by accident](/blog/blocking-ai-crawlers-by-accident/). ## Step 2: Write passages Perplexity can lift on their own Because Perplexity ranks self-contained spans, write every section as if it will be read alone. - **Answer the heading in the first two sentences.** "Does the platform support SSO?" should be followed by yes or no and the plans that include it, not by a paragraph about your security philosophy. - **Name the subject in each passage.** A span that says "it supports this on all plans" is useless out of context. Say which product and which plans. - **Put dated facts in text.** Pricing, limits, certifications and release dates belong in HTML text with a "last updated" date, not inside images, PDFs or tabs that load later. The stale content filter has to see that the page is current. - **Use tables for comparisons.** A table of plans, integrations or specs is easy to extract and hard to misquote. - **Cover the question nobody answers well.** Perplexity's hot storage favours undercovered topics as well as authoritative domains. A precise page on a narrow question, such as how your product handles data residency in one country, can beat a big site's generic overview. For B2B, the pages that win Perplexity citations are often the dull ones, like security, integrations, implementation time and pricing for a team of a given size. For B2C, they're product specs, sizing, return policies and honest "who it's not for" sections. We go deeper on passage writing in [how to get cited by AI](/blog/how-to-get-cited-by-ai/), and on how one question becomes several searches in [query fan-out](/blog/query-fan-out/). ## Step 3: Earn citations in forums and online communities The citation studies leave little doubt that discussion forums are a major Perplexity source. What matters is which threads get quoted, and reach isn't the signal. In the community programmes we run, only a small minority of threads ever get quoted, and rarely the ones with the most views. Low-view threads that answer a buyer's question produce the citations. The threads that earn Perplexity citations share a pattern. - **The title is the literal buyer question,** in the words a buyer would type. - **They're comparisons, migrations or alternatives.** "What are people moving to before X shuts down" and "X alternative for small teams" are the threads that win. - **The brand is in the post body,** so every thread that survives moderation can be cited for it. - **They're questions, not stories.** Question posts tend to survive moderation where story posts get removed. - **One topic, one thread.** Cross-posting the same question in several communities makes the threads compete with each other. Two more patterns matter for Perplexity in particular. Threads that are removed after indexing often keep being cited. And engines often cite a thread before it reaches Google's top 20, with Perplexity tending to cite earliest. That makes it the first place forum work tends to show up. Earleads holds forum work to a public standard. A human submits every post, nothing is auto-posted, the brand is never the only option mentioned and appears once, only where it answers the question, and the client approves how the brand is described and which communities are off limits. Everything is written by a named person with real history in that community. Work is ordered by how often engines cite a thread, not by upvotes. ## Step 4: Treat LinkedIn as a citable source For B2B brands, LinkedIn is the source most teams forget to optimize for AI search, and Perplexity uses it differently from the other engines. Since 59% of its LinkedIn citations go to Company Pages, start there. - **Make the company page a fact sheet.** What you sell, to whom, where you operate, and the plain-language category you belong in. Perplexity can only quote what's written. - **Publish original, explanatory articles.** Semrush found that articles of 500 to 2,000 words and posts of 50 to 299 words earn the most citations, that about 95% of cited posts are original rather than reshares, and that well over half of cited content is knowledge or advice. - **Don't wait for a big following.** In the same study, individuals with fewer than 500 followers were cited at least as often as those with more. The median cited post had 15 to 25 reactions. - **Put customer proof under the customer's name.** Customer stories tend to work best as a LinkedIn article published by the customer themselves, with their permission, rather than as a quote on your own site. A B2C brand can apply the same logic to the platforms its buyers use, such as YouTube, which Ahrefs found second only to forums across all Perplexity citations. ## Step 5: Fix the sources that describe you Being cited isn't the same as being recommended. Perplexity can quote a stale directory listing that says you only serve small teams, or a forum comment about a pricing tier you dropped last year. Perplexity shows its sources next to the answer, so the page behind a wrong description is easy to find. Every Earleads audit includes an AI accuracy check. We list each factual claim the engines make about pricing, product, positioning and leadership, what's wrong or stale, and the source each answer leans on. The fix is to correct the source where it lives, whether that's your own page with dated plain-text facts, the directory and review listings the answers cite, or the thread that keeps getting quoted. Then publish the correct version on pages Perplexity already reads, and re-run the questions until the description holds. Ask sales to log any claim a prospect repeats from an AI answer. The most damaging wrong answer is the one sales hears first, on a live call. For the wider repair work, see [AI reputation management](/blog/ai-reputation-management/). ## Step 6: Measure Perplexity citations natively Perplexity answers vary from run to run, so a single screenshot proves nothing. Measurement needs a fixed question set and repeated runs. **Build the questions from sales, not keyword tools.** Earleads builds each client's tracked questions from positioning and sales language, and keeps a question only if an answer exists and the client is missing from its sources. The client signs off the list before anything is measured. Add validation questions such as "is [brand] legit" to separate a trust problem from a findability problem. **Run them inside Perplexity.** We run every tracked question natively on paid subscriptions, because API answers aren't what buyers see. We tried scraping AI answers and dropped it, partly because Perplexity's citations came back partial. Each run gives three readings: whether you appear against named competitors, where you sit when you do, and how Perplexity describes you. Priority questions are sampled many times and reported as an appearance rate, never a rank. Our guide to [AI share of voice](/blog/ai-share-of-voice/) covers the maths. **Don't judge it by referrals.** AI answers send citations more than clicks. A buyer who reads your name in a Perplexity answer often types your domain later, which shows up as direct traffic. Add a "how did you hear about us" field at signup with Perplexity as an option, and watch branded search against the weeks citations landed. We cover joining these records in [AI search analytics](/blog/ai-search-analytics/). **Give it three months.** In our experience, community reach moves first, then citations of those threads, then the brand being named in answers, then Google rankings. Citations tend to compound in the second and third month, so don't judge the work at week six. ![Timeline showing the usual order of results from AI search work: community reach in month one, first citations with Perplexity often citing earliest in month two, the brand named in answers in month three, and Google rankings last](/blog/perplexity-seo-b2b/diagram-3.svg) *Perplexity is often the first engine to cite new community work, which makes it an early read on whether the work is landing.* ## Perplexity SEO for B2B vs B2C **B2B: the shortlist is a research report.** A champion asks Perplexity for options, someone in finance asks about cost and IT asks about security. The sources that decide these deals are documentation pages, practitioner threads, LinkedIn company pages and the listings a category relies on. Our guide to [GEO for B2B](/blog/geo-for-b2b/) covers how AI shortlists vendors and how to carry the source into your CRM. **B2C: the question is personal.** "Is this worth it for someone who travels a lot" is a first-person experience question, and Perplexity answers it from forums, reviews and video. Facts like specs and prices are won on your own pages, and opinions are won off them. For product cards and checkout, see the [Perplexity Merchant Program guide](/blog/perplexity-shopping-merchant-program/). ## Common Perplexity SEO mistakes **Blocking PerplexityBot to stop training.** PerplexityBot powers search results and isn't used for training. Blocking it removes you from the index and protects nothing. **Leaving facts undated.** Perplexity filters stale content before ranking. A page with no date and last year's numbers gives it a reason to skip you. **Writing sections that only work in order.** Perplexity scores passages on their own. A section that starts "as mentioned above" loses to one that answers the question in its first line. **Chasing reach in communities.** Viral threads rarely become citations. Threads whose title is a buyer's question do. **Ignoring the LinkedIn company page.** It's where most of Perplexity's LinkedIn citations go, and many company pages say less than the homepage. **Copying consumer citation stats into a B2B plan.** All-topic studies are dominated by consumer questions. Measure the sources Perplexity cites on your own buyer questions before deciding where to spend. **Expecting a rank.** Measure how often you're named across repeated runs and how you're described. An [AI visibility audit](/blog/what-an-ai-visibility-audit-should-show-you/) should show where you stand in Perplexity before anyone starts writing, and you can [request one here](/#audit). For the broader picture of what moves AI answers, see [AI search ranking factors](/blog/ai-search-ranking-factors/). ## Frequently asked questions ### How do I rank in Perplexity? Perplexity doesn't show a ranked list, so ranking means being one of the numbered sources in its answer. Its engineers describe a pipeline that drops stale content, scores pages and short passages for relevance, and keeps pages from authoritative domains ready to serve. Make sure PerplexityBot can crawl you, write sections that answer one question each with dates, and get mentioned on the forums and sites Perplexity already cites. ### Should I allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt? If you want to appear in Perplexity's answers, yes. Perplexity's documentation says PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in its search results and isn't used to train foundation models. It recommends allowing it in robots.txt and allowing its published IP ranges in your firewall. Blocking it is the surest way to stay out of the index its answers are built from. ### Does Perplexity respect robots.txt? PerplexityBot does. Perplexity says its search crawler complies with explicit limits in robots.txt files. Perplexity-User is different. It fetches a page because a user asked a question that needs it, and Perplexity's documentation says it generally ignores robots.txt rules for that reason. A robots.txt rule therefore controls indexing, not every visit from Perplexity. ### Which sites does Perplexity cite most? Across all topics, a discussion forum and YouTube lead by a wide margin. Ahrefs' September 2026 data on more than 3.1 million US queries gives them 21.6% and 20.8% of citations among the top 50 domains, with Wikipedia third at 6.3%. On business questions the mix shifts, and Semrush's research found LinkedIn among Perplexity's most cited sources. ### Does Perplexity cite LinkedIn? Yes, and mostly company pages. Semrush's March 2026 study of 325,000 prompts found Perplexity cites LinkedIn in 5.3% of responses, less often than ChatGPT Search or Google AI Mode. But 59% of Perplexity's LinkedIn citations point to Company Pages, while the other two engines mostly cite individual members. A complete, factual company page is part of Perplexity SEO for B2B. ### How long does it take to get cited by Perplexity? There's no fixed timeline, and citations come and go. In the programmes we run, engines often cite a community thread before it reaches Google's top 20, and Perplexity tends to cite earliest. Judge the first month on reach and whether posts survive moderation, the second on first citations and the third on how often you're named.
